Yeah, I'm with Paul on this one...I think it's a way to get people more interested in actually watching the Oscars. The ratings for the Oscars have been suffering of late, and it's not hard to imagine the reason being that your average moviegoer has not even heard of four out of the five movies nominated for best picture.

I mean, I pay attention to movies, but most of the time I barely know half of the films in the best picture category. This is because all these films are usually released on five screens across the entire country two days before the Oscar deadline, or something. If you don't live in some kind of cinematic holy land, you never get exposed to these films, and the media doesn't start covering them until the actually get nominated.

On the one hand I approve, because I think a lot of films get passed over for best picture because they're maybe TOO popular (e.g. the Dark Knight). It's always bothered me that a fantastic film doesn't get nominated because it made too much money at the box office; or an actor who puts in a phenomenal performance gets looked over because the movie s/he's in isn't best-picture quality.

On the other hand, ten nominees? That's a hell of a lot.

Very interesting article. I never really looked at it from an economic standpoint as much as just a popularity thing. I thought they just wanted to finally get some younger people in there to vote and also feature more popular movies than the smaller ones that many people don't bother going to see. Your point is very valid though, and it would have been nice to see the Dark Knight get a nod.

I guess this is my punishment for last year seeing all the best picture nominees BEFORE they were nominated. Let me see try and do that with ten films.
