Fashion Week: Interview with Jason Meyers
Interview and photos by Helen Fylactou
Jason Meyers may not have been the winner of Project Runway Canada, but being on the show definitely helped establish him as a fierce competitor in the world of fashion. Meyers recently unveiled his Spring 2010 collection at Toronto’s LG Fashion Week, exciting his fans and surprising the skeptics with street-savvy-meets-old-Hollywood designs. Although the collection was not flawless, the evolution in the types of designs and craftsmanship of Meyers was remarkable. This season, Meyers’ eclectic style incorporates his signature fishtail hems, busy fabrics, and explosion of ruffles. Refusing to stop until he has made his designs a household name, Meyers continues to educate and grow his collection.
MONDO: In comparison to last year, how did you prepare differently (if at all) for this year’s Fashion Week?
Jason Meyers: This year I really focused on quality of fabric, workmanship, and price point. I wanted this collection to be very marketable to get to the market place with customer satisfaction.
MONDO: This year’s inspiration for LG Fashion Week is “Wear Love.” Where do you find your inspiration?
JM: This season my inspiration was the 1955 movie Summertime, starring Katharine Hepburn. I developed my pieces from there.
MONDO: How do you decide on a theme from your runway show?
JM: Lots and lots of research and exploring things I like and connect with.
MONDO: How do you juxtapose wearable fashion with more couture designs within the same collection?
JM: I see my collection as versatile and wearable. Introducing some couture-like pieces brings an element of art and gives the collection another element.
MONDO: Do you find it difficult to market yourself outside of being a designer from Project Runway Canada? Or do you find that it has helped?
JM: National exposure absolutely helped put the brand on the map. Now my goal is to build the brand as a strong Canadian design house.
MONDO: Any fashion trends that you really dislike at the moment?
JM: Fashion is very objective. These days I believe everything goes, you just have to make sure you do it right!
MONDO: What can we expect from Jason Meyers in the future?
JM: Growth and versatility as a designer and person. I’m already really excited to start developing my Fall/Winter 2010 collection.
Jason Meyers’ collection included a strapless purple jumper, sinfully short shorts, an asymmetrical grey and white dress and a pair of cigarette pants. Inspired by the 1950s, Meyers’ ready-to-wear collection is created to make women everywhere feel good in what they wear. His collections can be found on Queen West at Boutique Le Trou.
