Comics I’ll Buy in September

Posted by Comics On June - 19 - 2009

Not that I want to think about September and the end of summer, but the solicitations for that month’s comics are out and I like to daydream about buying things.

From DC

WEDNESDAY COMICS #9-12 This is looking better and better! Check out this page by Joe Kubert! It ROCKS. Sargent Rocks.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #4 I think Phillip Tan is a very odd choice to fill in for Frank Quitely, but the first issue of Batman and Robin really impressed me so I have a feeling I’ll still be picking this up.

DETECTIVE COMICS #857 Still so pumped about this series. September’s issue will be the end of the first “arch.” I hope it’s a good one.

BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM #4 The more I see of this series the more interested I get. Plus, I think Victor Zsasz is fucking scary and apparently I’m into that.

SWEET TOOTH #1 Jeff Lemire is a sweetheart and this cover is amazing. Just, so amazing. I saw some preview art at TCAF and this is one well-drawn series.

THE UNWRITTEN #5 Two issues in and I can’t properly express how impressed I am with this series. It’s about literary geography! It’s time to nerd out, people.

From Marvel

DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN: EXODUS Bring on.

DARK X-MEN: THE CONFESSION The cover promises sexy Cyclops/Emma Frost arguing action. Can’t wait. Also, it’s written by some good writers.

UNCANNY X-MEN #515 This issue is so classified that they can’t even tell me who is writing or drawing it. That’s some top secret storytelling.

X-FACTOR #48 & 49 A double-dose of X-Factor will make the return of high-school students to the TTC more bearable. I hate those monsters but love the monsters in X-Factor.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #604-7 Four issues of Spider-man this month? Um, amazing — pun intended.

THE MARVELS PROJECT #2 (of 8) This series seems to be the reason that Brubaker won’t be on Daredevil anymore. It better be good or I’m going to burn down New York City. THE TORCH #1 (of 8) A new series about the Golden Age Human Torch? Written by Mike Carey? Interesting.

AGENTS OF ATLAS #10 & 11 I’m still into this series even though the last issue was a bit of a let down. I’m loving that it’s coming out twice a month though.

DARK REIGN: THE HOOD # 5 Turns out that this series is totally the sequel to Brian K. Vaughan’s original Hood series and that’s totally rad. Super into that.

MIGHTY AVENGERS # 29 This looks to resolve the Loki master plan. Pumped.

REBORN # 3 I can’t not see what all the fuss is about. Also, I love me some Captain America (says the Canadian patriot).

RUNAWAYS #14 I don’t care if death has no weight in comics. I just really hope this cover makes good on the promise of Gert’s return. She was such a great and truly unique character in comics. Killing her was a huge mistake.

SPIDER-WOMAN # 1 About time! This series was announced three years ago. See my excitement over here.

SECRET WARRIORS # 8 This looks Phobos-heavy and I love that creepy kid. Sold.

STRANGE TALES #1 (of 3) A bunch of indie comic superstars are coming on to tell crazy stories about Marvel characters? I’m super pumped. Seriously, Jason drawing Spider-man makes my life complete. Then you add Michael “Tales Designed to Thrizzle” Kupperman and I can’t fucking wait. He’s hilarious.

CRIMINAL: THE SINNERS #1 Fuck yes! Criminal is one bad ass book and The Sinners brings back some Tracy Lawless action. Highly recommended if you’re interested in crime fiction. Pick up the first trade “Coward” — you won’t be sorry and it gets better every time you read it. So well plotted.

ASTONISHING X-MEN BY JOSS WHEDON & JOHN CASSADAY OMNIBUS If you have ever liked the X-Men in any way or in any form you owe it to yourself to pick up this collection. It’s some of the best work on the X-Men ever. All the characters pop, the story is exciting, and then you have John Cassaday drawing the HELL out of it. When it was originally released there were month gaps between issues but each one was still worth it. Reading it in one gulp will be a thrill.

DAREDEVIL BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS & ALEX MALEEV OMNIBUS VOL. 2 HC Soon my DAREDEVIL BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS & ALEX MALEEV OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC will have its brother to sit next to on my shelf. Truly fantastic comics. This is where the series took a serious turn to the post-modern and I loved it even more. Amazing art to boot. Can’t wait to spend… oh, a hundred bucks… yikes. Still, totally worth it.
