Love and Mathematics
Love and Mathematics EP
Independent, 2007
By Todd Aalgaard
Straight out of Vancouver comes Love and Mathematics and no, this isn’t the third track from Feel Good Lost by Broken Social Scene.
There’s a frenetic energy to their self-titled EP, a kinetic, staggered, confessional edge in “Remember To Masticate” and “Copper Coin Bikini” that’s damn near impossible to pull off with half an ass. It jumped out at me when I listened the first time, the line that’s got to be crossed by any act seeking an honest expression and not genre-humping poseur status. While many have fallen short and quivering, the desperately intense, take-this-and-go-fuck-yourself thrust of Love and Mathematics is still ringing in my ears, a hum left by ethereal vocals and pulsing, bent-frequency guitar work that makes you go, “Yeah, okay, let’s hear more.”
Sadly, there’s not enough to really hear what else these guys can pack. It’s a teaser sample, revealing just enough of their bright, layered sound to leave a grinningly frustrated case of musical blue balls. Their live act, I imagine, would melt your face.
A MySpace keener exhorts them to play Calgary more often. Maybe a few gigs east of the Rockies will lend a bit more to write about, because something tells me this EP doesn’t do Love and Mathematics justice.
